WEDNESDAY CHANTING Kochi - Kerala - India

In Natraj's house, Wednesday evenings are for praising the hindu gods through music and song. The local musicians often joins in, as do friends and family. But even if no one shows up, Natraj and his mother will sing and play and pray themselves. It is a tradition of the house.

These photos and sound recordings are from two such Wednesday evenings in 2011 and 2012.

There are several different types of praisings in the sound recordings. It is mostly bhajans, or hymns, but there are also chanting of names of the gods, prayers, a bit of getting the instruments ready, and the chanting for the AARTI ritual where you can hear a bell ringing.
